Today we talked about the 7 active listening skills that can be used to show empathy in order to build rapport. Building rapport helps to influence decisions and de-escalate someone in crisis. The 7 active listening skills are Reflective/Mirroring Open Ended Questions Minimal Encouragers Emotion Labeling Paraphrasing I Messages Effective Pauses Included is a scholarly article that talks about negotiations with someone in crisis and how to build rapport. This is a good article to use as a basis for training material. I have also included the instructor and student guides from Albuquerque Police Department’s Active Listening Class. This class is updated often so please contact APD’s CIT here for the newest training material.
We had a lively conversation about a unique case presented during this meeting. We talked about Multiple Sclerosis so I am attaching some information about that to this posting. Please see the other attached material for information on drugs terms and names. This material is great for academy or inservice training handouts.
