About Us

The Crisis Intervention Team Inc. (CIT Inc.) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3), organization founded by a detective and a physician to help avoid and minimize crisis through various, innovative programs focused on raising community standards around behavioral health and crisis intervention.

Our slogan of "People-Provider-Public Safety" represents our efforts of bridging the gaps between public safety, health care, families and those living with mental illness.

We are advocates for the Crisis Intervention Team model in communities and strive to enhance programs that are established and beginning. We believe in an open collaboration with all parties to bring together communities to better the lives of the people living there.

Our work and programs are volunteer run and made possible by community support and donations.

History

In 2011 Nils Rosenbaum MD, a psychiatrist, and Matthew Tinney, a law enforcement detective, began to recognize deficiencies in the community for those living with a mental illness and a lack of resources for first responders to help someone in a crisis. They teamed up to create a positive change in the community and set standards for others to follow.

In the beginning to reduce stigmas and encourage everyone to help someone in need they created an awareness, de-escalation, and negotiation curriculum and taught it to providers, law enforcement, attorneys, and students at the University of New Mexico.

While teaching students at the University of New Mexico’s Law School the idea for a non-profit was created. The non-profit would be used to continue the efforts in creating innovative and standardized approaches to raising community standards around mental heath and crisis intervention. With the help of UNM’s Law School the Crisis Intervention Team, Inc. was successfully granted non-profit status from the IRS July 24,2012. Our IRS EIN is 46-1430864.

Since the inception the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Inc. has been successful in creating multiple innovative programs that were lacking in the local community and set standards for worldwide communities to follow. All programs are volunteer ran and made possible from donations.

The CIT ECHO is a collaboration with UNM’s Project ECHO, the Albuquerque Police Department, and CIT Inc. to bring specialty training, support, and knowledge in CIT policing and behavioral health to front line law enforcement personnel. It does this by engaging law enforcement and providers in a continuous case based learning system and partnering them with specialist mentors at an academic medical center or hub. This is continues ongoing videoconferencing training and does not replace a traditional CIT course.

The CARE Card program was created to reduce the negative impact for people with disabilities and whom they come in contact with. The cards came from the idea that if you could hand law enforcement a card with your disabilities and communication tips then both parties would have a better understanding and it would help reduce community tragedies and misunderstanding.

The Helping Hand program is in place to give first responders resources needed to engage the most vulnerable population and help those in need. There is not one population over looked in this program. We have teamed up with Target to get toys, school supplies, blankets, and more in the vehicles of first responders. We partnered with the Roadrunner Food Bank to create cruiser bags, plastic bags of food and water, for law enforcement to carry in their vehicles. Cruiser bags help the most vulnerable with a source of nutrition and follow up information for food programs and programs for self-sufficiency. Donations also help provide first responders with access to emergency housing, food, medication, clothing, and other needs.

We continue to provide training to multiple agencies and organizations continuing advocating for successful communication, engagement, and to reduce negative impact to all parties.

The Crisis Intervention Team Inc. is always working on innovations in crisis intervention techniques, destigmatization, education, and helping in the community. All programs are volunteered run and made possible from donations.
