Perspectives from Peers (Consumers); A Time in Crisis

I had the chance to talk to some people who are living with mental illness about their interactions with law enforcement. It was great to hear their stories and suggestion for better interactions. I can't imagine how hard it would be to talk about your illness, let alone such a stigmatized one publicly.

The term consumer has been given to decribe someone who is living with a mental illness ,but locally consumers prefer to be called peers. After hearing these brave people talk and answer questions here are some do’s and don’t in a time a crisis for first responders.

Do’s
  • Treat a crisis as you are the only advocate for the person at that time
  • A  team approach with the subject helps with rapport and buy in
  • A child’s attempt at suicide may look different than an adults but should be taken just as serious
  • Taking a less authorative approach can help build rapport
  • Asking rather than telling someone to do things gains faster compliance
  • Have open body language
  • Treat the person as a person and not the illness or call
  • Ask what you can do to help the person

Don’ts
  • Negative body language (e.g.  crossed arms, furrowed brow, etc.)
  • Ordering to do simple tasks like sitting down
  • Talk down to someone in crisis
  • Treat the person in need as a criminal
  • Not allow someone access to their medication

My favorite line that was said was:
“Officers are our advocates for our health when we cannot advocate for ourselves”
So remember when you are out with someone you are their lifeline and the one who can truly help someone when they are in crisis or a time of need.
