Nils and Matt start this episode off answering questions around law enforcement and if they are prohibited from having a firearm if they have a mental illness. We then listen in to Melissa Garzon MD and Caroline Bonham MD as they talk about first episode psychosis on the CIT ECHO.
Listener Question this week.
Lisa wrote us on Facebook after reading about Miami-Dade’s new unit around firearms and people living with a mental illness. You can see that article here. She asked. “I have question what happen if the cop has mental illness or PTSD? Another question about HIPPA: they have to be compliment to HIPPA.” Officers are normal citizens and the laws around prohibited people with firearms will apply to law enforcement as well. If an officer is adjudicated mentally ill or if they are convicted of a felony they would not be allowed to possess a firearm. Having a mental illness alone is not a reason to be prohibited from a firearm. Seeking treatment for an illness will not prevent you or make you give up any rights. HIPAA is the Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act and it apply to organizations that are billing for mental health care.
